Adventure Games

Elric the Thief crept guardedly down the ancient dungeon corridors.  His torch illuminated the utter darkness of the catacombs, producing strange shadows on the earthen walls.  His wanton search for glory and riches had taken an unwelcome turn, as he found himself separated from his adventuring party, lost in an endless maze of passages.  In his mind, he recalled the battle with the Owl Bear which had gone very badly.  When the creature turned on Elric, he tried to fight at first and then simply ran.  Losing the slow-footed beast in the tunnels had been fairly easy for the elusive footpad, but now he was alone, and unsure of his direction.  However, his purpose was sure, as his only torch was starting to flicker in the weary light. He needed to find a way out of this forlorn place, and breathe the cool air of Morannon once more with the meager wealth that he had acquired.

Just ahead, his eyes spotted an abrupt end to the tunnel. A small opening in the wall stood between his current plight and the possibility of freedom! There was also the chance that it concealed unknown creatures, more disgusting and powerful than anything he had encountered before.  Kneeling down, he put his ear to the opening and listened for any trace of movement.  Hearing none, Elric searched for traps, then examined the floor and adjacent wall.  Finally, he poked his head into the darkness.    Bringing the torch through the opening, he spied the space beyond.  It appeared to be a small chamber, devoid of life, and unattended for many years. However, what caught his eye was the oaken chest to his right.  The desire for gold and greater things captured his thoughts once more.

Elric approached the chest, setting his torch beside him on the dusty stone floor. He had just started to play with the treausre chest’s lock when a shadow on the near wall became distorted, growing larger with every passing second. Nearly paralyzed with fear, Elric dropped his hand to his belt and fingered his now glowing dagger, still stained with goblin blood.  With lightning fury, he leaped from the chest, swinging his arm in a deathly arc across his body…
